PARKS & RECREATION

WK Dickson believes that parks and open spaces provide a sanctuary for leisure and an escape from the urban jungle. City parks appear in many shapes and sizes. Many have recreational features, such as basketball courts, baseball diamonds and playgrounds. Others are simply open spaces with ponds, greenery or woodlands.

Parks create important corridors for wildlife and vegetation. Whatever type, a park provides space to enjoy close-to-home recreation and preservation of natural landscapes.

Park and Recreation design is a specialty at WK Dickson. Over the past 20 years, our Urban Development Group has planned and designed more than 150 state and municipal park projects.

WK Dickson proactively works with users, owners and staff to build a consensus plan. Through a conscious design process, critical social, environmental and recreational factors are successfully incorporated into the aesthetic and functional features of the open space. These facilities are creative, innovative and match the client's needs and budget.

The National Park System includes 19 separate designations, such as national park, national seashore, national battlefield, and so on.

Central Park, in New York City, is one of the largest parks in the world. Designed by the landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted, work started in 1856 and, in the course of laying out the park, some 5 million trees were planted.

New York's parks were named the best state park system in the country in 2003. The awards are presented bi-annually by the National Sporting Goods Association's Sports Foundation, Inc. to communities throughout the US.
