Gene sold his firm to WK Dickson in 1996 to create our Hickory, NC office and continued to work with us for many years. He was a professional engineer who specialized in the design and construction of commercial, municipal, and civil infrastructure. After his professional boards, he became president and principal engineer of G.E. Smithson Associates, Inc. from 1970 to 1996. Outside of the office he was a gifted trombonist in the Auburn Knights Orchestra. On the 50th anniversary of the Glenn Miller Band, he was inducted as an honorary member of that band in a ceremony at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Aside from jazz, his favorite pastimes were airplanes, golf, fitness, civil war history, and a good cigar.
