WK Dickson has been officially notified of our selection to provide services for the planning and design of the rehabilitation of Runway 18C/36C at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. This runway was the first at 10,000 feet in North Carolina and was responsible for making Charlotte-Douglas a truly ‘international’ airport. It has held up well despite surpassing its 20 year lifespan by more than 10 years. It was originally designed in 1979 by David Peeler. WK Dickson will provide all planning and design necessary to replace virtually the entire surface of the runway, improve and strengthen ramp and taxiway intersections, as well as upgrade lighting and electrical systems. Potential additions to the project may include an additional paved shoulder running the length of the runway and new touchdown zone (TDZ) lighting on the north end. At the time of its original construction, a landing surface of this length was critical to the emerging economy of the region because it could handle massive, long-haul cargo aircraft such as a fully-loaded Boeing 747 for use by the Flying Tigers (later merged with FedEx). Now that Charlotte-Douglas is ready to open its new 3rd parallel runway in 2010, design work can begin on the rehabilitation project. The runway improvements will help the airport meet future demands as Charlotte-Douglas continues to grow into one of the most successful airports in the Southeast. Charlotte-Douglas has become the 8th busiest airport in the nation for aircraft operations and the 14th busiest in passenger boardings. Overall the airport contributes nearly $10 billion in annual economic impact to the Charlotte region and runway 18C/36C is a big reason why.
