WK Dickson Receives Another Coveted Engineering Excellence Award

WK Dickson was the recipient of the Grand Award during last night’s ACEC/NC Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in Raleigh. The firm was honored in the category of ‘Special Projects’ for use of sustainable and low impact development techniques in the design of Deep Point Marina -- Bald Head Island’s new mainland ferry terminal located in Southport, North Carolina.

Deep Point Marina features a number of innovative ‘green’ design techniques intended to protect the area’s fragile maritime ecosystem. WK Dickson worked closely with the owner, Bald Head Island Limited, to reduce impacts to natural vegetation and groves of specimen trees on the 76-acre site, all while providing parking facilities for over 2,100 vehicles.

The design team’s dedication to planning the site around the existing environment and its adherence to more advanced sustainable design principals has produced a modern facility that greatly exceeds local, state and federal requirements while emphasizing the natural beauty of the Cape Fear Region.

An Engineering Excellence Award is a significant industry prize that generates dozens of entries from consulting firms across the state of NC. Entries are judged by an outside panel of judges on the basis of overall engineering excellence in each of ten practice areas, based on the work performed by the entering firm and scored in accordance with guidelines such as original or innovative application of new or existing techniques; future value to the engineering profession; complexity of the project; and exceeding the client's expectations.
