A project that has been years in the making is finally coming to WK Dickson. A cooperative made up of the cities of Concord, Kannapolis and Albemarle have selected our firm to design and construct a massive transmission line that will supply water for nearly a dozen cities through two major North Carolina counties. The WK Dickson team has been working behind the scenes with the Cooperative to develop the preliminary concepts and distribution agreements behind this historic water sharing initiative. The project will include more than 100,000 feet (19 miles) of 30 inch water main as well as two high capacity pump stations and a ground storage tank. Services to be performed by WK Dickson include environmental services, land surveying, and overall engineering, design and construction inspection. Water interconnections of this nature are not unusual but this project is unique in that it solves two major problems at once. Concord was experiencing unprecedented growth and could no longer keep up with demand nor tap into the already overused Catawba River; while Albemarle on the other hand had a sizable reservoir and water treatment plant built to serve the needs of the many textile mills in the area. When that industry all but disappeared in recent years they were still left with the debt to pay for the facility. WK Dickson’s approach to this project showed that it was a cost-effective and common sense strategy they could deploy to supplement their water supply and collect much needed revenue. Connecting one system’s infrastructure to another will provide not only an effective means to keep up with growing demand for water, but will also serve as a solution during periods of drought and other time critical situations such as major water line breaks, water supply contamination, or power outages at water treatment plants. With this system, even a larger city can be helped by a smaller neighbor in times of crisis.
