WK Dickson has been selected to provide runway rehabilitation services for Laurinburg-Maxton Airport in eastern North Carolina. Laurinburg-Maxton is a World War II era airport that has been rated as having the worst runway surface in the state. Its continual use by heavy aircraft has resulted in significant degradation of the airfield surface. The project will include the complete rehabilitation of primary runway 5/23. The 6,500 x 150 foot runway is capable of supporting heavy commercial and military aircraft of up to 210,000 pounds. The project will also include the rehabilitation of the secondary runway 13/31 which must be completed prior to starting on 5/23. Laurinburg-Maxton is a public airport located three miles north of Maxton and east of Laurinburg, both towns in Scotland County, North Carolina. This general aviation airport is home to the United States Army Parachute team ‘Golden Knights’ and serves as a military training ground with drop-zone. The airfield was constructed for the United States Army Air Force during WWII. During the war the airfield was a large training base for glider-towing aircraft. Today the airfield is noted for being the home of a company which parts-out and scraps older aircraft. Visitors to the airfield can see a large number of 727s, 747s, and other aircraft at various stages of being dismantled. In 2006 the nose of Northwest Airline’s first 747-100 was removed from the aircraft at Maxton by Charlotte Aircraft and was sent Washington DC where it is now on display at the National Air and Space Museum.
