West Walton Park - Loganville, Georgia In Loganville Georgia, W.K. Dickson is designing a park adjacent to the new West Walton County Government Center. The park includes active sports fields as well as passive recreation facilities for community use. Services include site analysis, public meetings, master planning, design development, construction drawings and construction observation. The focus of this process is to work with the community.
Pinckneyville Park - Gwinnett County, Georgia Gwinnett County's largest soccer complex, located in Norcross, Georgia, includes five regulation soccer fields on a 35 acre site at the headwaters of the Mill Creek watershed. The park includes over 500 parking spaces, a two-acre scenic pond, a one-mile multi-use paved circuit trail, three picnic pavilions, two playgrounds, two concession / restroom buildings, and a retention pond.
Wills Park - Alpharetta, Georgia This 120 acre park located near downtown Alpharetta offers numerous athletic facilities including baseball, swimming, disc golf and equestrian. A major recreation attraction for the citizens of Alpharetta, Wills Park is scheduled for several upgrades and renovations to existing facilities as well as the addition of some new ones. W.K. Dickson has been commissioned to provide Design Development through Construction Observation / Administration for the renovation of four baseball fields; tennis facility with support building;?poolside water feature with shelter building; disc golf course; new and / or renovated horse stables; horse show ring; topographic survey of entire park; and parking facilities. The design team offers recreation design, civil engineering, architecture, electrical engineering, irrigation design, aquatic design and landscape architecture.
McKoy Park - Decatur, Georgia W.K. Dickson has been commissioned to develop renovation plans for McKoy Park in Decatur, Georgia. The project includes landscape architecture, civil engineering, surveying, architecture, park lighting and irrigation plans. McKoy Park is an 8-acre neighborhood park that is dominated by a 330 baseball field. The scope of the project includes improvements to the ball field surface, irrigation system, new fencing, new dugouts, redesigned built-in bleachers and a renovated plaza at the concession building. It also includes a renovated picnic shelter, the replacement of timber retaining walls with stone walls, renovated tennis courts, a new walking/jogging path and upgraded landscaping throughout the park.
North Central Ballfield Complex - Rockdale County, Georgia This 140 acre park complex consists of two tracts of land. The tract north of Old Covington Highway is 100 acres and contains eight international soccer fields, a two-acre lake that provides detention and water for irrigating both tracts, walking trails and the maintenance compound for the complex. The south tract is a 40 acre park consisting of eight softball fields and two football fields with concession buildings, restroom buildings and parking. In developing this park many issues had to be incorporated into the design. The site contains jurisdictional wetlands, subsurface rock and two cemeteries.
YMCA Soccer Fields - Atlanta, Georgia This six field soccer complex is located adjacent to Nancy Creek. This 20 acre site had difficult constraints with a Colonial and Plantation Pipeline Easement, sanitary sewer easement, stream buffer, existing structures, overhead power lines, and limited road frontage. W.K. Dicksons contract included design, layout, paving, utilities, grading, drainage, erosion control, tree protection, cross sections and construction details. In addition, W.K. Dickson provided construction staking and construction administration.
South Walton Park - Social Circle, Georgia The City of Social Circle is developing a new 50-acre park to serve the community as well as a new high school planned adjacent to the park site. W.K. Dickson is commissioned to prepare a site program and develop construction drawings for the park. The park includes four baseball fields, two football/soccer fields, a tennis center, facilities for volleyball, picnicking, a nature trail and a walking/jogging trail with connection to the future adjacent high school.
Legion Field Baseball Complex - Rockdale County, Georgia The Legion Field Complex is located off of Georgia Highway 138 in Rockdale County, Georgia and consists of several softball and baseball field and one football field. This park had grown organically over time by adding ballfields in locations that seemed to be the most cost efficient at the time of construction. The Master Plan converted the football field into four tee league baseball fields and batting cages and the softball fields into baseball fields. Furthermore, the circulation patterns of pedestrians and automobiles was studied and new drives and walkways separate the two and organize the existing parking and add new parking.
Gwinnett County Master Plan Contract - Gwinnett County, Georgia W.K. Dicksons recreation planners and landscape architects performed master planning services for Gwinnett County Department of Community Services Parks and Recreation Division. As recreation master planning consultants to Gwinnett County, W.K. Dickson provided planning services for additions to existing parks, new bicycle trails, renovation plans as well as master plans for new park sites.
Gwinnett County Design Guidelines - Gwinnett County, Georgia In order to implement Georgias largest recreation SPLOST budget, W.K. Dickson is working with Gwinnett County to develop recreation construction and design guidelines and standards for future park renovations and new facilities. The purpose of the Recreation Design Standards and Guidelines is to unify the look of the overall park system, reduce the cost of maintenance, and streamline the design and construction process.
Criswell Road Park - Walton County, Georgia This park includes a baseball and soccer complex, amphitheater, walking/jogging path and picnic facilities for families and large groups. These facilities were integrated into future improvements for an agricultural center and arena.
Collins Hill Park - Gwinnett County, Georgia Master planning and design work for Collins Hill Park included baseball fields. Responsibilities included planning, as well as the execution of schematic design, design development, planting design, and detailed construction documentation. Extensive earthwork and grading was required to accommodate the facilities.
Top Hat Soccer Club - Atlanta, Georgia This 17.5 acre site is located entirely within a designated FEMA flood plain area. Plans called for the construction of soccer fields, a gravel parking lot, and a concession building. A detailed hydrology study was prepared and a HEC 2 flood study performed. Field surveys for cross sectioning the site were completed to demonstrate post-developed impacts to flood storage volumes.
Tribble Mill Park - Gwinnett County, Georgia Various signage design types were provided for this regional park located in Gwinnett County. Types included new directional, traffic and trail head signing, an entrance feature, and kiosks. Services included conceptual design through construction observation.
Temple Park - Newnan, Georgia Just outside the heart of downtown Newnan is the passive Temple Park. Part of the park is maintained by the City crews and part by the garden club. W.K. Dicksons landscape architects enhanced the passive garden design with improved bedlines capturing new shrub planting and floral displays. The planting plans separated shrub areas to be maintained by the City crew from the more intense perennial gardens maintained by the garden club. The design is unified by sweeping bedlines and meandering walks.
Jackson Street Park - Newnan, Georgia This quaint park located in Newnan, Georgia acts as a pedestrian corridor linking a busy residential area to historic Oak Hill Cemetery. Two pedestrian paths wind through the site. One path meanders through oaks, maples, redbuds, as well as a retained tree save maintaining the more natural section of the park. The other path weaves through planting beds of shrubs, flowers and ornamental grasses or the more gardenesque area of the park. The paths converge at two separate common areas where wrought iron / wood benches and garbage receptacles are provided. W.K. Dickson was responsible for designing, planting plans, and providing demolition and layout plans for the City of Newnan.
Park Renovations - Newnan, Georgia During a multi-year contract with the City of Newnan, W.K. Dickson has assisted with renovations of many of the citys parks and recreation facilities. A plant palette was developed specifically for the city to identify native and signature plant specimen. Wildflower beds and the plant palette were utilized in renovating and beautifying five existing city parks. A new circulation design and hardscape plan was also developed to incorporate into the design.
Caroline County Park Master Plan - Caroline County, Virginia The Master Plan for this comprehensive Athletic Facility addressed the need to provide services for this fast growing suburb of Washington D.C. The plan for this wooded 25 acre site included a three field baseball complex, community center and pool facility, picnic areas, playgrounds, basketball courts and an exercise trail with fitness stations.
Exchange Park Master Plan - DeKalb County, Georgia The expansion and renovation of this beautiful 120 acre County park site were aimed at recreating a safe, inviting environment for a community that was driven away by use of the facility for undesirable activities. Anchored by a three acre lake, the plans called for introduction of a staffed community center and pool with pedestrian access from the adjacent neighborhood. Walking trails connected the six new baseball fields, tennis complex and a large handicap accessible playground.
Douglas Municipal Park - Douglas, Georgia Assisted the City of Douglas with the development of a comprehensive master plan and construction documents for their 158 acre municipal park. The master plan program includes eight tennis courts, one championship soccer field, a three field adult softball complex, two children's play areas, group and individual picnic shelters, miles of multi-use and nature trails, parking for 400 cars and the realignment of an existing road.
Lowery Road Park Master Plan - Monroe, Georgia This project included the development of a recreation facility for Walton County at Lowery Road. This plan incorporates three mens baseball fields, a softball field, four tennis courts and a walking / jogging path on a compact site. Picnic facilities and playgrounds are integrated into the park design.
Mason Mill Park Master Plan - DeKalb County, Georgia This ecologically unique, 135 acre site was master planned to balance a wide range of activities with the desire to preserve the natural integrity of the site. The plan was developed with extensive use of public meetings and input from community groups. An innovative county program led to the development of a senior citizens activity center in the park. A WWI era water treatment facility was proposed for renovation into a cultural feature and play area. A small open meadow and parking area were planned to provide pedestrian access to the site from surrounding neighborhoods.
Walton County Government Center - Loganville, Georgia The new Walton County Government Center is a mixed use office complex constructed in 1996. A man-made lake area includes a walking path, boardwalk, four tennis courts, and picnic facilities. A screened portion of the site is utilized by a county recycling collection facility.
McDonough Road Park Master Plan - Clayton County, Georgia Development of a regional recreation facility master plan for South Clayton County. Facilities include an aquatic center with 25 meter indoor pool and olympic-size outdoor pool with a diving well; baseball complex with eight ball fields for various age groups; a fourteen court tennis center with two tournament courts and pro shop, access to an existing soccer complex, and an ADA accessible nature trail along an existing stream bed and existing fishing pond which links picnic facilities throughout the park site.
Johnson Park / Tennis Complex And Gymnasium /Natatorium Rockdale County, Georgia Preparation of the master plan and Phase One construction documents. Phase One consisted of the construction of a new gymnasium, natatorium and recreation headquarters building, four tennis courts and additional parking. This construction was difficult due to groundwater and mass rock. However, through subsurface exploration and careful site planning this project was built within budget.
Pates Creek Nature Preserve Henry County, Georgia This Nature Park is located on Pates Creek Elementary Schools property. Prior to this project the school had no true playfields. The scope of the project consisted of constructing a four acre playfield, a nine foot wide all-purpose trail, a mulch nature trail, educational signage, a gazebo, foot bridges and a play structure. This was all designed to be handicapped accessible.
Windyhill Soccer Complex Henry County, Georgia Windyhill Soccer complex consists of ten soccer fields and is located in McDonough, Georgia. The site had been permitted as a vertical landfill and is located adjacent to the old landfill used by the county for decades. The soccer complex had to be designed to connect to a trail system being developed by the county.
Taylor Farm Park Master Plan - Paulding County, Georgia Completed Master Plan and commenced construction documents for 200 acre park to include ball field, tennis and soccer complexes, a three acre lake and picnic pavilions.
Airport Road Park Master Plan - Spalding County, Georgia Completed Master Plan for renovation of 15 acre park to convert it from active recreation to passive uses for walking trails, picnicking and playground activities. Plan included renovation of turf areas and use of major tree plantings.
Westover Recreation Park - West Columbia, South Carolina The Westover Recreation Park was designed for the Lexington Recreation Commission. W.K. Dickson provided civil engineering services including grading and drainage, stormwater, sidement and erosion control, water and sewer, handicapacessibility, parking layout and details. Westover Recreation Park consists of two Pony League Baseball Fields, two Little League Baseball Fields, four tennis courts, playground, picnic areas and parking.
Medlock Park Master Plan - DeKalb County, Georgia Master Plan for expansion to an existing flood plain facility adjacent to Peachtree Creek. The plan provided for a six field baseball complex with central concessions and a football field with baseball overlays. Flood prone areas were developed for passive uses and the storm drainage system renovated to help mitigate flood impacts.
Gordy Property, Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department - Cobb County, Georgia The scope of the project included performing a boundary survey on 18.8 acres for a proposed Aquatic Center to be built by the Cobb County PRCA at Sandy Plains Road and Gordy Parkway. Also included in the scope of the project were the location of the 100 year flood plain, location of adjoining roads and curb cuts and the location of public utilities bordering the property, and delineation of wetlands on the property.
Rooker Property, Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department - Cobb County, Georgia The scope of this project included performing topographic and tree survey of 48.6 acres for a proposed Cobb County park in conjunction with the construction of a proposed new Cobb County school. The topographic survey included the location of all structures on the property and within 50 feet of the proposed boundary line of the park. The scope also included the location of all utilities bordering the property and showing contours at a two foot interval. The tree survey of the proposed park is to locate all species of trees 12 in diameter or larger on subject property.
Monroe Road Elementary - Monroe, North Carolina Responsible for design and preparation of plans for 17-acre school site project including two football/soccer fields. Design consisted of grading, paving, storm drainage, water and sewer, storm water retention, erosion control measures and securing developmental permits.
Fort Mill Elementary School - Fort Mill, South Carolina Prepared design and construction plans for 25-acre school site with football/soccer and softball fields. Project consisted of grading, paving, storm drainage, water and sewer, storm water detention, erosion control and permitting.
Fort Mill Middle School - Fort Mill, South Carolina Provided civil site work including football/soccer and softball fields. Design included grading, paving, storm drainage and erosion control for Fort Mill Middle School.
North Rockdale Greenway - Rockdale County, Georgia This ISTEA project involves the design and development of an eight mile greenway for Rockdale County citizens and visitors to enjoy. The trails will provide access for pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian activities.
Heritage Trail - Athens, Georgia Responsibilities included preparation of design concepts and construction documents for this ISTEA funded multi-use facility. Located along the Oconee River, the bicycle trails and pedestrian corridor connects citizens to their places of employment and schools and students with the University of Georgia system.
College Station Gateway and Bikeway Project - Athens, Georgia Services for these Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) and Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) projects include Master Planning through Construction Observation. The project included the widening of the existing road to incorporate a bicycle lane, a pedestrian walking trail, improved vehicular circulation and landscape beautification.
Okeefenokee Swamp Parkway - Waycross, Georgia This ISTEA project included the development of plans to enhance native planting and incorporate a bicycle path on U.S. Highway 10 between the City of Waycross and the Okeefenokee Swamp. The design includes an anchor park in downtown Waycross and a number of rest areas for bicyclists and motorists.
Little River Canyon National Recreation Area - Fort Payne, Alabama In collaboration with the National Park Service a plan was developed and designed a system of parks connected by a scenic parkway focused on the Little River and Little River Canyon on top of 100 mile-long Lookout Mountain in Alabama. The project included a land use plan, viewshed and watershed protection plans, three anchor parks, a parkway system and hiking and bicycling trails including the development of a portion of the Tennessee-Alabama-Georgia rail line as a multi-use trail linking the park to other park systems by means of the rails-to-trails program.
Oxbo Trail - Roswell, Georgia Developed the Master Plan and Construction Documents for a linear trail system along historic Victory Creek in Roswell, Georgia. The project involved extensive collaboration with the City and public interest groups through a series of public meetings to define goals and establish program for development responsive to the needs of the local community. The completed plans included the design of the trail, foot bridges, creek overlooks, signage, and landscaping.
Chattahoochee River Project - Atlanta, Georgia This project sponsored by the PATH Foundation involved evaluating the feasibility and potential for establishing a linear river Greenway Park that would reclaim and preserve approximately twelve miles of suburban river corridor. This project received a Merit Award in 1995 presented by the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Academy Street / Webb Bridge Road Bikeway Improvements - Alpharetta, Georgia This ISTEA funded project provides improvements to Academy Street - Webb Bridge Road to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians. A bike route was created in both directions by increasing the curb lane of the street. Pedestrian connections are made from residential areas and downtown to the future greenway system along Big Creek.
Little Mulberry River - Gwinnett County, Georgia W.K. Dickson developed plans for a 1030-acre land preserve that is to include facilities for passive recreation. The plan includes three types of trails connecting various activity areas on the site. The Multi-Use Trail is a 4.25 mile paved 12 path for the use of walking, jogging, bicycling, skating, etc. The Watershed Interpretive Trail is a 1.3 mile circuit that includes Station Points that describe various components of the protected watershed that are viewable in that vicinity. The Backcountry Trail is a 6.75-mile woodland path that provides a hiking experience similar to that of trails in the north Georgia mountains.
Upper Tampa Bay Bike Trail - Tampa, Florida Master planning and landscape architectural design services for the 5-mile pedestrian / bikeway trail in Tampa, Florida. The trail also contained a 100-foot wooden bridge over a stream. The project was an ISTEA funded facility through the Florida Department of Transportation.
Takomah Trail Park - Tampa, Florida Master planning and landscape architectural site design of a 26 acre passive park located adjacent to a stormwater management area. Facilities include bike and hiking trails, fitness trails and picnicking.
Greenway at Southern Village - Chapel Hill, North Carolina Prepared design and construction documents for approximately 2,000 lf of paved pedestrian and bike trail. This project included skirting adjacent wetlands, minimizing grading operations within the 100-year floodplain and floodway, and provision of textured pavement where the greenway crosses residential streets.
Atlanta University Center / West Side Olympic Corridor Atlanta, Georgia A 4.9 mile corridor connecting the Georgia Dome to the Atlanta University Complex where Olympic Training was held at two separate site and where the Field Hockey events were held during the Olympic Games. Landscape Architectural services included a complete package beginning with the Master Plan through Construction Observation. Elements of the project included sidewalk and plaza design, furnishings, and lighting fixtures. This project was awarded the Atlanta Urban Design Commission Award of Excellence for Urban Design.
Conover Entrance Drive Conover, North Carolina The landscape architects at W.K. Dickson prepared a concept for a primary city entrance for the City of Conover. The design includes city entrance signage, landscaping and a multi-use sidewalk path with decorative lighting and benches. The streetscape amenities of the citys downtown was carried through this gateway design to provide continuity for a concept that can be applied to other gateways into the city.
Camilla Downtown Streetscape Camilla, Georgia The Downtown Streetscape Plan for the City of Camilla focussed on reducing the scale of the wide streets by introducing medians, and converting a city block that included huge live oak trees to a City Park. The plan also upgraded all of the sidewalks in a ten-block area by improving the crosswalks and handicap ramps, adding street trees and decorative lighting, and renovating damaged concrete areas. The plan included a planting plan for the Court House and site planning for a new Regional Development Commission building.
Sixteen Village Gateway Conover, North Carolina A mixed use development is planned adjacent to Interstate 40 called Sixteen Village in Conover NC. W.K. Dickson designed a gateway feature to direct visitors from the interstate to the development and to provide a gateway into the area of the development. The concept design is visible from the interstate and also functions at an appropriate scale as an entrance gateway.
Cartersville Downtown Streetscape Plan Cartersville, Georgia The challenge of the Downtown Streetscape Plan for Cartersville was to create a pedestrian-friendly environment in the central downtown that is divided by a rail line. To do this, an urban park was developed that highlighted the historic depot and provided a pubic gathering space. All of the sidewalks were planned to be renovated including brick cross-walks, street trees and new lighting. While with another firm Mr. Provost served as project designer for this plan.
Civic Center District Pedestrian Corridor Atlanta, Georgia The Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta (CODA) served as the client in developing the plans, construction documents and cost analysis for this 10 block area in Downtown Atlanta. The project involved evaluating pedestrian path options linking the Atlanta Civic Center to the MARTA Station on West Peachtree Street. Streetscape treatments were developed for all public spaces along the corridor. Additional services for the project included evaluation of land acquisition, recommendations for future land use for the district, and development of preliminary cost analyses for all elements of the project. On West Peachtree Street at Pine Street a wayfinding display, by the artist Maria Artemis, directs visitors to the Civic Center.
Downtown Newnan Newnan, Georgia This Master Plan developed the streetscape and garden renovation for historic downtown Newnan, Georgia. After considerable research the design merged historic images with modern materials to accommodate the current needs of the automobile and pedestrian. The formal design theme centered around the traditional town square courthouse.
Downtown Decatur Streetscape - Decatur, Georgia Project Engineer for streetscape project in downtown Decatur, Ponce de Leon Avenue from Commerce Drive to Church Street, a portion of Church Street south of Ponce de Leon, and the end of McDonough Street as it enters the town square. Provided civil engineering services including horizontal layout, profiles, and cross sections for the proposed improvements. Project was designed using GWN-DTM and Microstation.
Griffin Downtown Street Enhancement Griffin, Georgia The completed plan for this Downtown Redevelopment project enhances the store front streetscape area and wide street medians, but also takes advantage of the alleyways between the buildings and large parking areas at the interior of the blocks. The plan also emphasizes the large parking areas behind the downtown buildings and the passageways that bring shoppers and downtown business employees to the beautified street fronts. These improvements intensify the overall downtown experience.
The project elements include new sidewalks, crosswalks, ornamental street light fixtures, new street trees, enhanced median planting with new directional signage, and street furnishings including benches, bollards and trash receptacles.
Ralph David Abernathy Olympic Corridor Atlanta, Georgia This Olympic Corridor produced for the Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta (CODA) connects Olympic Stadium to the transportation system along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard. The corridor links the two sides of the Mechanicsville neighborhood and bisects the area by providing pedestrian scale elements such as a community park, seating areas, new sidewalks and crosswalks enhanced with color pavers, and new decorative light fixtures. The scale of the six lane road was reduced by recreating the boulevard with the addition of central medians planted with large shade trees and lighted with new decorative street light fixtures. A bicycle route is also incorporated into the boulevard with the addition of a designated bicycle lane and signage which links into the city-wide and state-wide bicycle path and greenway system.
After the Olympic Games the corridor was designed to function as a gateway to the stadium during its use by the Atlanta Braves Baseball Organization.

5th Avenue - City of Columbus, Georgia Project Engineer for 5th Avenue from 14th Street to Hamilton Road, GA-DOT project PRP-8350-54 (215). Provided complete engineering services for the widening and reconstruction of a two and three lane urban arterial to a four lane with flush median section for the City of Columbus and Georgia D.O.T. The project was designed and produced using Intergraph Inroads and Microstation.
International Boulevard Olympic Corridor - Atlanta,
Georgia Project Engineer for the International Boulevard project from
Marietta Street to Piedmont Avenue for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta under CODA.
Provided Engineering design services for a .75 mile section of streetscape improvements on
International Boulevard in downtown Atlanta . The design involved narrowing the
existing roadway to create a more pedestrian friendly section. Project was
coordinated with the Olympic Centennial Park. The project was designed using GWN-DTM
and Microstation.
